What is diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea or loose and frequent evacuation of the bowels is an affliction, which has been a major
problem since long time.
What are the predisposing factors?

The predisposing factors are:
1.Heavy fatty foods, ingestion of poisonous substances, intake of improper diet, sudden fright or
shock due to the death of a beloved one, or worrying too much, may cause diarrhoea.
2.The moment the causative worry or shock wears off, diarrhoea caused by it stops automatically
without the need for any drugs.
3.Eating things that are either contaminated or have gone bad, increase the chances of infection
that may cause diarrhoea.
4.In some cases even antibiotics do cause it.
5.The other factors may include change of climate, change of season (as in spring or autumn),
change of diet to which a person is not habituated.
6.The factors responsible for long term or chronic condition of diarrhoea are:  poor or inadequate
diet, consistently eating food stuffs to which one is unknowingly allergic, cooking food in
aluminium pans for long time, perpetual emotional dramas or stress or fright and over eating.
7.Children, particularly babies, are vulnerable to a change of diet or milk, teething, and changes in
season.
What are the signs and symptoms?

Symptoms suggest the type of diarrhoea viz:
1.Large amount of stools with little mucus suggests small bowel disease.
2.Small amount of stools with excess mucus suggests large bowel involvement.
3.Constipation alternating with diarrhoea may suggest irritable bowel syndrome or laxative habit.
4.Diarrhoea recurring after certain foods suggests allergy.
5.Watery stools usually in emotional diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis.
These symptoms should alert you to seek apt advice from your doctor; should not tempt you to
arrive at a diagnosis.
What are the investigations usually carried out?

The investigations to be carried out under medical supervision are plain X-ray film of abdomen,
barium enema, barium meal, chest ray. Your physician will suggest the apt investigation after
thorough examination.
In what way Ayurved can help me?

In Ayurved, atissar is the disease that has similar symptoms like diarrhoea. Atissar literally means
frequent watery stools, similar to the expression one’s bowel turning to water.
The following remedies are useful to fight diarrhoea:

1.Arrowroot - Mix 1 tablespoon of the powder to a paste with a little  cold water. Then thin to
gruel with boiling water. Add honey and cinnamon to taste.
2.Rice - A good food for a suffering child is plain boiled rice mashed up with banana.
3.Rice Water- Boil 25 gm of rice gently in 1 liter of water for one and half hours. Stain and drink
the liquid to soothe the bowel.
4.The juice of fresh potatoes mixed with carrot juice and honey clears the bowel of infection.
5.If an allergic reaction to a food or drug is the cause of diarrhoea drink two glasses of grape juice
and water. Being mild laxative the grape juice throws off the toxins, which are accumulated owing
to the reaction.
6.Drink plenty of water, since dehydration is the acute problem arises out of diarrhoea.
7.Although the desire to stop a painful attack of diarrhoea may appear of paramount importance,
it is better to allow the body to flush itself clean of the cause completely, which usually takes 24
hrs. However, if it continues after that, professional advice should be sought. In emergencies
never delay to seek professional advice.
8.In babies and young children seek professional advice .
What are the preventive measures?

1.Avoid overeating.
2.Drink boiled water.
3.Do not cook food in an aluminium pan for long time.
4.Avoid foodstuffs, you find you are allergic to.
5.Avoid intake of food rich in fat.
6.Eat very little when tummy is badly upset, keeping the consumption to bland, dry foods and lots
of water.
7.In babies who are bottle fed, pay special attention as to the bottle being contaminated.
What are the dietary recommendations and other regimen?

The diet should include pomegranates, buttermilk, grape juice, infusion of fennel, moong (green
gram) water similar to that mentioned under rice water, honey, cumin seeds or ginger after meals.
When afflicted, complete bed rest and fasting for initial few hours or consuming liquid diet will be
of immense help.
Refrain from wheat, bread, spinach and other leafy vegetables, green peas, black gram, non-
vegetarian diet, mango, pineapple.
Avoid staying awake till late nights.
